Dr. Steven Jonas

Dr. Steven Jonas holds a B.A. from Columbia College, 1958, received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1962, earned an M.P.H. from Yale School of Medicine in 1967 and completed his residency in Preventive Medicine/Public Health at New York City Department of Health in the same year. He also received an M.S. in Health Management at Wagner School of New York University in 1997. He is Professor Emeritus of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook, NY (retired, Jan. 2, 2014). Over the course of his career his major foci of work have been in health policy, regular exercise and sport (triathlon and duathlon racing), health and wellness promotion, drug policy reform, and U.S. politics. He is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences (elected), the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Public Health Association, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the Royal Society of Medicine (UK). He is a Past President of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (now known as the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research), and a past member of the New York State Board for Medicine. He is a recipient of: the Founders’ Medal, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, for Contributions to Medical Education (1982); the Duncan Clark Career Achievement Award from the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (2006), the Faculty Recognition Award of the Graduate Program in Public Health, Stony Brook University (2008): and the Yale School of Public Health, Distinguished Alumni Award in 2010. He has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited 19 books of his own and has collaborated on 17 others, including, among others: the first text book on the US health care system, Jonas-Kovner’s Health Care Delivery in the United States, first published in 1977 (currently in its 12th ed.); Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals (1986); Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice (1996); The 15% Solution: How the Republican Religious Right Took Control of the U.S. 1981-2002 (1996; 3rd version, 2013); ACSM’s Exercise is Medicine tm: A Clinician’s Guide to Exercise Prescription (2009); Duathlon Training and Racing for Ordinary Mortals®: Getting Started and Staying with It; and, most recently, Ending the Drug War; Solving the Drug Problem: The Public Health Approach (2016). He has also published a monthly column on the website of USA-Triathlon for many years. Since the early 2000s has published columns on various political webmagazines including OpEdNews.com and buzzflash.com. His personal political website is Stevenjonaspolitics.com, on which virtually all of his political columns (by 2020 approaching 1000 in total) can be found. In 2016 he was selected as an Honored Member for the “Top Doctors Honors Edition of Trademark Who’s Who.” In 2019 he received the “Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award” from The Marquis Who’s Who Publications Board. In 2020 he received the “Top Doctor 2020” award from The Global Directory of Who’s Who. Also, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, in 1958, his biography has appeared annually in Who's Who in America since 1988 and he has been a Mensan since 1988.
